Please note: The situation here in Bangkok is unstable and may have changed already. This is what it was like today at 6pm Thailand time.
Rising food and oil prices are not the only reasons why the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and its supporters have been camping and rallying in Bangkok's government district for 26 consecutive days now. They are fed up with PM Samak's weak and in their eyes ineffective politics to tackle the country's major problems. They also believe that their old enemy Thaksin is behind the government.
The rally is perfectly organized: If you want to get to the site you have to pass a PAD security checkpoint where your bags are checked for weapons. Obviously the leaders of the PAD do not want their supporters to become too violent. In fact, they have been claiming over and over that their protest is a peaceful one. However, despite these claims they tried to storm the government building today at around 1pm but were held back by the police.
Along the road there is a large number of tents where the supporters of the PAD have been living in for the past 26 days. They have their own food stations filled with stacks of rice bags and other groceries. Roughly every 200 meters you have to pass a road block until you finally reach the main stage where the leaders of the PAD shout their paroles to the yellow crowd (yellow being the color of the king). Old and young people--they are all united under this royal color.
The images here were taken between 3pm and 6pm at the main protest area, just a few hundred meters away from the government building, and as you can see the aggressive group has cooled down after this afternoon's attack. However, several people told me that either tonight (Thailand time) or tomorrow morning at around 9am the PAD plans another massive assault on the government building, kicking out PM Samak once and for all.
The police on the other side are ready for anything, securing the bridges to the government district. Officers with riot gear, tear gas guns and gas masks are in position. RIght now, anything can happen--from a peaceful protest to a violent riot. The PAD even brought some boats in case they cannot conquer the bridges and hand out masks against (possible) tear gas shootings and free bottles of water to keep the people strong. They really don't seem to be willing to give in.
